Installing Web Pages

Having designed your website, you will need to install the pages on Gifford Internet's web server, to allow the world to witness your creation.

Installing the pages on the server is relatively easy. You simply upload the pages to your web directory (public_html) using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) tool. Once the pages have been installed, use your web browser to view your site by entering its URL into the address field. Unless you have your own domain name, the URL of your site will be of the form:-

  http://www.gifford.co.uk/~username/pagename

where username is your Gifford username (or login name)
and pagename is the name of the page to be displayed.

For those who will be doing this for the first time or who are not familiar with the procedure, you can follow the step by step guide below.

  1. Obtain an FTP tool
An FTP tool is used to transfer files between your computer and the web server. This process is normally referred to as uploading your site. If you do not have an FTP tool on your computer, we recommend that you download WS_FTP LE from the Tucows site. To install the FTP tool, double-click on the downloaded file and respond appropriately to the prompts.

  2. Open the FTP tool
Either double-click on the WS_FTP icon or click on the start button select programs, etc, etc...

  3. Connect to the Web server
In the Host Name field, enter www.gifford.co.uk
In the User ID field, enter your username (or login name>
In the Password field, enter your password
Click OK to connect to the server

  4. Select directories on the server and on your computer
If you are using WS_FTP, the server files will be displayed in the big box on the right hand side. Open the public_html directory (or folder) by double clicking. Again, if you are using WS_FTP, the files on your computer will be displayed in the big box on the left hand side. Open the folder on your computer which contains your web pages. (If necessary, double click on the little green arrow to move back up the directory tree.)

  5. Transfer the files
The FTP tool handles picture files and text files in different ways.

Picture files will normally have a .gif or a .jpg extension. To upload a picture file to the server, highlight the file (click once on its name), click on the radio button labelled binary (normally at the bottom of the window) and click on the arrow in the centre of the screen pointing to the right.

Files which contain your HTML code are text files. These will normally have a .htm or a .html extension. To upload a text file to the server, highlight the file (click once on its name), click on the radio button labelled ASCII (normally at the bottom of the window) and click on the arrow in the centre of the screen pointing to the right.

  6. View you site
Now that you have uploaded your pages, you can view them by typing the URL of your site into the address field of your web browser. Unless you have your own domain name, the URL of your site will be of the form:-

      http://www.gifford.co.uk/~username/pagename

where username is your Gifford username (or login name)
and pagename is the name of the page to be displayed.
